Shoppers will find widest selection of treasures

The first visitors to Turkey Creek Public Market on Friday, Aug. 12, will find a vibrant, ever-changing regional marketplace with more than 500 artisans, crafters, farmers and pickers offering the widest selection of goods and services.

The market opens at 10 a.m., although normal operating hours will be 8 to 5 Friday through Sunday all year long.

“Turkey Creek Public Market is like no other shopping venue in the area,” said Charles Atchley, one of the developers. “It is certainly going to be a fun place to shop. With so many vendors under one roof and even more in our outside Farmer’s Market Plaza, there is something here for everyone. But it is also a community gathering space, and that’s the exciting part.”

The facility, with nearly three football fields of space, is packed with an unending variety of finds including antiques, collectibles, jewelry, fashions and accessories. Shoppers will find unique items and great bargains as well.

Vendors include artists from the Foothills Crafters’ Guild, a variety of antiques and collectibles dealers plus home interior retailers such as Gift and Gourmet, Persian Rug Galleries, Callaways, O.P. Jenkins, and Bennett Galleries.

“We are so excited to be a part of the Turkey Creek Public Market,” said Bennett Galleries Owner Rick Bennett. “The concept is phenomenal and it allows us to reach a West Knoxville customer who doesn’t ordinarily shop in Bearden. So please come by and see what surprises we have in store.”

There are several jewelry makers, apparel and accessories designers such as Jetta Boone. Planet Xchange will have a presence and Goodwill Industries is even branching out to operate a boutique-type store in the new market.

Food services on site feature a butcher shop, a seafood shop, Java coffee, four restaurants including a Mexican cantina, a pizzeria and a barbeque vendor plus Denton’s and its famous Orange Julius. Shoppers will find treats from Magpies and Cities Cupcake Boutique as well as a variety of fresh-baked breads and sweets.

Additionally, the market will have monthly and seasonal events such as a "Back to School" weekend, scheduled for Sept. 17, a Fall Festival and events centered around the holidays.

Vendors have been very enthusiastic about the new market. Especially in this economic climate, entrepreneurs are finding the market offers a low-risk opportunity to start a business.

Outdoors, the Farmers’ Market Plaza offers an additional 150 covered spaces for local farmers and craftspeople selling locally grown produce and handcrafted art.

Kathy Burke-Mihalczo who runs Erin’s Meadow Herb Farm near Oak Ridge is coordinating the outdoor market. Throughout the year, the Farmers’ Market Plaza will offer free educational programs, cooking demonstrations and family activities on topics such as healthy cooking, organic gardening, local agriculture and sustainable living.

“We have several events planned for opening weekend,” said Burke-Mihalczo. “We also have plans for a monthly antiques and collectibles fair outside beginning later this fall. We have had great response and participation, but still have a few spaces left for qualified vendors for the plaza.”

Free and open to the public, this weekend’s events at the Farmers’ Market Plaza include:

  • Saturday, August 13
    • 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – “Kaboom! Kabobs!” Cooking demonstration by the UT Culinary Institute featuring homegrown grilled veggies.
    • 1-2 p.m. - “Fun Food Facts for Families.” An interactive family activity with nutritionist Andrea Wolfer teaching parents and children how to add pizazz to food with fresh herbs from the garden.
  • Sunday, August 14
    • 10:30 a.m.-noon - “Yummy Yoga.” This family-friendly activity with nutritionist Andrea Wolfer introduces parents and children to Sun Salutation, balance poses and interactive yoga games. After yoga, participants will make fruit smoothies and yogurt parfaits.
    • 12:30-1:30 p.m. - “Compost Happens!” Educator Bob Grimac will offer tips on how and where to build your compost pile and teach you how to turn kitchen waste into black gold for your garden.

Friday through Sunday - The Habitat for Humanity Home Store of Oak Ridge will be at the outdoor market with items such as furniture, lamps, books, art and home décor for purchase.

The market’s indoor facility will also serve as a community gathering space.

“This is an amazing space for events,” said Libby Fisher who is coordinating events for Turkey Creek Public Market. “The venue is available to corporate, non-profit and community groups as well as exhibitors and trade shows. We are booking businesses and groups interested in using the facility during business and after hours. This facility is a great community asset.”

Turkey Creek Public Market is located at 11221 Outlet Drive just north of I-40/I-75 at Lovell Road exit 374. Additional information is available at http://www.turkeycreekpublicmarket.com or by phone at (865)671-5000.

Market Opening Delayed by Storm Damage

Dear Vendors, we are sorry to report that the Public Market July 15 Opening will be postponed due to roof panel damage caused by the June 21 storm which has wreaked havoc in West Knoxville. Under normal circumstances an event like this would cause only minor delays but the Market opening requires a Certificate of Occupancy which cannot be obtained without perfect conditions in place.

Replacement roof panels have to be ordered, shipped, and then installed. The extent of the delay is undetermined and we will keep you informed of the new opening date as soon as that can be assessed.

We recognize the inconvenience this causes our vendors and beg your indulgence as we wrestle with the challenges of opening. We are winding down construction activity, installing landscaping, and topping off the parking lot as we prepare to acquire the Certificate of Occupancy. We are very proud of the Public Market and our excitement only adds to our resolve to get facility open as quickly as possible.

A new opening date will be announced shortly.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at 865-671-5000.

Vendor Orientation

Market Update For Vendors

Thank you for your continued interest in the new, Turkey Creek Public Market. We expect about a million shoppers a year to enjoy the exciting public market experience!

Shopping hours have been set for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 8am-5pm – and occasionally Monday holidays.

We have experienced some construction delays due to the weather. Pleasing our vendors is our top priority. We understand the anxious anticipation to visually experience the new market! We can’t thank you enough for your patience and understanding.

The good news is that on certain days you are now allowed to visit the property. Please call 865-671-5000 to make an onsite appointment. Vendors will receive an email shortly about the orientation meeting.

The Basics:

If you don’t already know, the new public market is located across the street from Cotton Eyed Joe on Outlet Dr. - right off the 374 Lovell Rd exit.

  • Physical address: 11221 Outlet Dr. Knoxville TN 37932
  • Mailing address: PO Box 1210 Kodak, TN 37764
  • Phone: 865-671-5000
  • Email: TurkeyCreekPublicMarket@gmail.com
  • Website: TurkeyCreekPublicMarket.com

We offer FREE basic utilities, parking, trash and cardboard haul away, Wi-Fi, an aggressive marketing and advertising campaign, and, an advanced security system - all included in the rent.

After the opening, vendors/shopkeepers may set up and work in their “shops” Mondays and Thursdays 8am to 4pm. Special arrangements maybe allowed for vendors with a scheduling conflict. After the main offices are open, vendors will be welcome to come in to work on their booths five to seven days a week.

Booth Construction:

We will construct booths at no cost for our vendors opening at the same time we open for shopping. The booth frame and basic OSB board will be installed according to the shopkeepers’ requirements. We will have some items available for rent such as display cases. Due to storage issues, we are asking you provide your own peg board or slat board. We will still install the walls for you at no charge. We are still taking quotes for security tarps. We will be sending each vendor a “form” to fill out with booth construction requests.

Outside Farmers Market:

Outside spaces will rent up to $25.00 per day (Friday, Saturday, Sunday – 8am-5pm – and occasionally Monday holidays). The $25.00 rent fee includes the space where you can back your truck into the space to bring your produce or other farmer related products out of the back of your truck and to your provided table to sell to your customers. All spaces are positioned under a covered pavilion with a table. Easy set up. No tents necessary! Farmers just need to show up on the days they wish to sell, contact the management about rent, taxes & business license information and simply choose an outside space that is unoccupied. Permanent or long term space rentals are available but merchandise must not be left on the property over night. If you know in advance when you will be arriving, we would love a “heads up” phone call!

Communication:

We have been trying to contact some vendors for several weeks now. If you or someone you know is in this situation, please contact us! Occasionally, a voice mail is unclear and we are unable to return the call. We apologize for this and it is fortunate that this situation is rare.

Sincerely,
Turkey Creek Public Market
